BANGLADESH (2008-09): THE RIVER
THE RIVER
The capital Dhaka is at the confluence of several main rivers, and the largest is the mighty Buriganga (Ganges). I spent time along its banks, photographing the ferry terminal, one of the largest in the world, where villagers from all over the country came in on overloaded passenger ferries. Huge vegetable markets sold mangoes, papayas, bananas and countless other products from the farms. Piles of logs, timber, and bamboo were stacked along the river also. Ship-building workers and close-by residents alike used to wash, go fishing, and troll their small boats along the water. Hundreds of canoe-like water taxis navigated around the larger ferries in a scene of pandemonium, with sirens and porters going out to catch arriving ships.
